CEO Safety Award

The Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) would like to congratulate Laing O’Rourke on being awarded our 2017 CEO Safety Award.

Laing O’Rourke are currently engaged as the managing contractor on the $87.1M International Terminal Northern Concourse Expansion and their Next Gear approach to safety was chosen to receive this award as it best represented the safety values of BAC.

Laing O’Rourke’s Next Gear program is based on engagement and trust and places people at the heart of safety decision making.

From the outset of the project, Laing O’Rourke have applied the Next Gear framework and have remained consistent in their unwavering approach to positive safe outcomes in everything they do. The three principals can be described as:

  • People are the solution. This focuses on empowering people who are doing the work and believing that they don’t go out of their way to get hurt or be unsafe.
  • Safety is the presence of positives looks at the health of the safety system as a whole and recognises the 99 times they have done it safely rather than the one time they didn’t.
  • Safety is an ethical responsibility downwards. Safety is personal and accountability is vested at the level where the work is being done. Laing O’Rourke provides a framework that supports people, and leaders engage in conversations of positives.

One of the keys to the success of this program is Laing O’Rourke’s informative and well executed on boarding process. This process prepares the workforce for the site and ensures that the right fit is achieved, right through to the use of innovative technology that is highly appropriate to the modern world we live in.

The Next Gear approach doesn’t stop with the on boarding process though. It is continually supported, an example of this being the use of sessions known as ‘Collective Insights’ which allow contractors, supervisors, client, stakeholder and any other relevant party to come together to review processes, outcomes, relationships, future activities in an informal environment to constantly improve and evolve.

BAC would also like to congratulate Tomkins Commercial and Industrial Builders and FK Gardner and Sons (FKG) on receiving a Highly Commended as part of these awards. Tomkins were nominated in recognition of demonstrating best practice in the erection of concrete tilt-up panels while FKG were recognised by demonstrating best practice in transportation and installation of 30/30 cover RRJ pipes.
