Environment Management

Environmental Management

 BAC is committed to making Brisbane Airport a prosperous centre for aviation, industry and business while maintaining the highest environmental standards.

BAC recognises the importance of maintaining and enhancing the quality of the environment and has put in place responsible and achievable environmental management strategies to minimise the impact of airport operations and expansion.

BAC has prepared an Airport Environment Strategy which describes the environmental impacts from airport ground operations and identifies programmes and investigations to be implemented during the term of the strategy.

The current Brisbane Airport Environment Strategy was approved by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government on 19 August 2009 and will be revised by August 2014. The Airport Environment Strategy supports the Master Plan by requiring day-to-day environmental management during design, construction and operational phases of development.

Through the Brisbane Airport Environment Strategy, BAC and its tenants are committed to a high level of environmental management.

Airport Environment Strategy

 The Airport Environment Strategy is a statement of the combined intent of BAC and other airport users to implement responsible management strategies in accordance with airport legislation and other relevant laws. The elements addressed by the AES include:

• Energy Management

• Air Quality and Emissions;

• Waste Management;

• Water Management;

• Soil Management;

• Biodiversity;

• (Land based) Noise; and

• Heritage.

EMS

The EMS represents a systematic approach to managing environmental issues across BAC’s business. The EMS is a management tool designed to capture (or identify) all activities conducted by BAC and assess the level of environmental risk that each activity may pose, then to manage those risks, audit performance, review the approach and strive for continuous improvement.

It is designed to be integrated into BAC’s overall business strategy and management systems, establishing environmental considerations as a routine aspect of all BAC’s activities.

Legislative Framework

Environmental issues on Brisbane Airport are administered principally by Commonwealth legislation, the Airports Act 1996 (the Act), the Airport (Environment Protection) Regulations 1997 and the Airport (Building Control) Regulations 1997 (the Regulations).

The Airport Building Controller (ABC) and the Airport Environment Officer (AEO) are the on-site regulatory representatives for the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government who administer the Act and Regulations on behalf of the Commonwealth Government.
