Brisbane Airport staff get their hands dirty for the community

03/09/2009

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) staff have gotten their hands dirty on a BACyard blitz across the northside in an effort to give back to the community.

As part of BAC’s team building ‘Passion Days’ the company partnered with the local northside charity Australian Community Safety and Research Organisation (ACRO), which operates social justice programs for people in need.

BAC staff visited a number of homes over the past two weeks providing free yard and house spring cleans and in some cases home and yard makeovers.

BAC Human Resources Executive Manager Gwilym Davies said the home and yard cleans have been a great way for staff to make a difference in the community.

“Passion days are all about inspiring staff to make a difference in their lives, both at work and at home. By going out and helping others, our BAC staff get the opportunity to feel good about themselves and the company for giving back to our local community.”

“We have been running Passion days for our 230 staff members for seven years now. Last year we helped children from a local special school and this year the focus is on residents in the local community.”

Fiona Begg ACRO Programs Manager said BAC were helping with the Home Assist Secure program.

“This project is providing a service to older people and people with chronic health issues who are just not able to physically undertake those bigger jobs around the house and yard that always build up and that they have been wanting done for a long time,” Ms Begg said.

“They want to stay in their homes for as long as possible but need assistance to do so, and BAC staff have helped us and these residents enormously over the past couple of weeks to make sure they can.”

“The resources provided by BAC enabled the project to provide a much broader range of services for clients than we are usually able to give. We are hopeful that more businesses and corporations will take up the challenge that BAC has initiated,” she said
