Brisbane Airport welcomes Gateway Upgrade Project’s new 7km of Motorway

17/07/2009

Brisbane Airport has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Main Roads Craig Wallace today regarding the opening of the seven kilometeres of new Motorway north of the Gateway Bridge.

Brisbane Airport Corporation Pty Limited (BAC) CEO and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe said the opening of this new section of Motorway signalled the “the beginning of the end” of the Airport’s choked access points.

“We congratulate the State Government and Queensland Motorways on delivering a great piece of infrastructure which will not only improve traffic flows on the Gateway, but is also critical to busting the congestion of roads leading to and from the Airport,” Ms Alroe said.

In the coming months the missing link will be delivered, when the Gateway Upgrade Project’s Airport Interchange connects to BAC’s Northern Access Road, due for completion in the coming months.

The Northern Access Road is a $200 million five kilometre, high speed, multi-lane road, which will provide a second access and egress point for Brisbane Airport.

The Northern Access Road is a major component of BAC’s $4.2 billion privately funded infrastructure program to be delivered over the next two decades.

Ms Alroe said when the Northern Access Road is opened, the two projects combined will take 40% of vehicles off the existing East-West Arterial/Gateway Arterial roundabout.

“We expect to see significant relief for drivers with the final completion of the new airport road network in the near future,” she said.

“BAC is committed to delivering extra capacity to the Brisbane Airport road network. For this reason the next six months will also see further upgrades around the Domestic Terminal precinct, and along Lomandra Drive.”

These upgrades will be complemented by the State Government’s Airport Link project, which will see a new east-west flyover above a signalised intersection interchange, replacing the existing East-West Arterial/Gateway Arterial roundabout.
