Brisbane International Terminal prized for architecture

31/07/2009

A blending of the old and new in a contemporary Queensland feel has led to Brisbane Airport's new International Terminal being awarded the prestigious Art and Architecture Prize at this year’s Queensland Architecture Awards.

Brisbane firm BVN Architecture's design was recognised for its distinctive Queensland feel, world class airport design principles and the ability to integrate new and old elements within a 24-hour operating environment.

BVN Architecture Principal, Chris Clarke, said he was very proud of the project at the Brisbane International Terminal, which was completed late in 2008 at cost of around $340 million.

"The finished design is contemporary yet retains and builds upon the friendly and uniquely Queensland nature of the existing terminal which was identified by and embraced by our client, Brisbane Airport Corporation," Mr Clarke said.

BAC CEO and Managing Director, Julieanne Alroe, said Brisbane should be proud of the new Terminal, which was world-class in operation and design, and put Brisbane International Airport on the stage as one of the best airports in one of the best cities in the world.

"The look and feel of Brisbane International Terminal is a credit to BVN Architecture and is a reflection of Queensland with an abundance of light filled corridors and expansive views of the city and the aircraft. It is a new world airport for a new world city.

"This award is testament to BVN Architecture and will further ensure that Brisbane International Airport is seen as a significant gateway to the world and a great welcome to Queensland.

"Even in an economic downturn it is important to prepare for the future and to show innovation and sustainability in our designs and the Brisbane International Terminal certainly fulfils this goal."

The International Terminal expansion, funded by Brisbane Airport Corporation, began in September 2006 and was completed in late 2008.

The new building boasts a 64 percent increase in floor area, dual aerobridges to cater for the super wide bodied A380 aircraft, additional passenger and check-in facilities with uninterrupted views of the airfield and double the number of retailers.

The Queensland Architecture Awards recognize the profession and encourages others to strive for excellence in architecture.
