Thai Airways direct flights take off in Brisbane

22/10/2009

Thai Airways will start flying direct non-stop from Brisbane to Bangkok return on Monday 27 October, resulting in the existing Sydney stopover being dropped from the service, providing passengers with more time in their destination and less time travelling.

BAC CEO and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe congratulated Thai Airways and wished them well for the start of the direct non-stop route.

“Direct services such as these make it easier for Queenslanders wishing to travel overseas, and it also encourages overseas travellers to visit our sunshine state, helping to boost our local tourism industry,” Ms Alroe said.

“Distance, travel time and cost are strong battles our Australian tourism industry has to face, however, non-stop flights such as the revised Thai Airways service will help to make the region closer, and more attractive to overseas tourists than ever before.

“This is a major vote of confidence from Thai Airways in Queensland’s ability to draw visitors from around the globe,” she said.

V Australia will also start new services to Phuket in November, reflecting the strength of the outbound market and impact of the strong Australian dollar and current exchange rate.

These new and improved services will help to continue the growth in passenger numbers being experienced over recent months.

The month of September has seen growth in both the International and Domestic passenger movements, with a 2.7% increase in international passengers and 1.1% increase in Domestic passengers travelling through Brisbane.

“These numbers may not be significantly large, but they are a positive, and they indicate the strength and resilience of the aviation industry and Queensland’s tourism industry, despite tough economic times.”

Brisbane Airport currently has more passengers flying through than ever before, with more than 19 million passengers flying through the airport in the last financial year, breaking Brisbane Airport’s passenger record and defying the economic downturn.
