Planning for a parallel runway, two kilometres west of the current main runway, commenced more than 20 years ago even before Brisbane Airport moved to its current location in 1988. It was recognised then that as the capital city for a growing state, Brisbane would experience, over time, a level of passenger and freight demand that would give rise to the need for a new parallel runway.
The NPR Project was approved by the Australian Government on 18 September 2007.
The government approval follows BAC's assessment of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Major Development Plan (MDP) for the $1 billion project, which was the subject of a robust and inclusive two-year public engagement period.
Works for the NPR are expected to commence in 2012 with the runway expected to be operational by 2020.
Minor Variation to the Major Development Plan for the NPR
The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, following a consultation and public comment period, has approved the Minor Variation to the Major Development Plan (MDP) for the New Parallel Runway (NPR) project at Brisbane Airport (Minor Variation).
