As part of an ongoing commitment to the environment and sustainability, Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) operates a fleet of 11 electric buses for the landside transport operations within the airport precinct. The operation of the buses required a dedicated base location both for maintenance and electric charging. Works were completed in June 2019 off Ivy May Way near the existing AIRPARK, and delivered:
- New bus maintenance facility
- New bus cleaning facility
- New office building
- New hard-stand bus parking facility
- Eight new electric bus charging stations.
Environmental benefits of the project include:
- 100 per cent electrically charged buses; zero tail pipe emissions
- Reduction of 250 tonnes of carbon emission each year, equivalent to taking 100 cars off the road
- Driving range of 600 kilometres on a single battery charge
- Reduced noise pollution
- Engineered office building roof designed to maximise rainwater harvesting
- Engineering structural design to support solar generation
- Bio-retention basin to capture and treat storm water runoff before it is discharged to the storm water drainage system
- Improved local air quality compared to similar local buses
