Travellers passing through Brisbane Airport this festive season were treated to an uplifting musical experience as Camerata – Queensland's Chamber Orchestra, filled the departure lounges with the merry sounds of Christmas carols.
For Jonny Ng, Principal Second Violin, Artistic Associate and Education Manager of Camerata, performing at the airport during the festive season brings a special kind of wonder.
"There's just something about playing Christmas songs that makes everyone unashamedly happy. It really has been an absolute joy and pleasure playing here at the airport."
Over the years, Camerata has earned recognition across Australia for its adventurous programming and creative collaborations, bringing classical music to audiences across Queensland and beyond.
The orchestra maintains a busy performance schedule throughout the year. "Last year, we performed 87 live performances, and this December alone, we've already given 15 performances," Jonny shares.
Brisbane Airport's commitment to making Brisbane a vibrant place to live and visit is reflected in its long-standing support of local Arts organisations. Their partnership with Camerata is one of many meaningful relationships that help enrich the city's cultural landscape.
The partnership has been important to Camerata's growth and reach across Queensland. "Our partnership with Brisbane Airport has allowed Camerata to grow," Jonny explains.
"It's helped us reach new audiences, and inspire communities through music, and we are so grateful for this long-standing partnership because it has been pivotal to Camerata's growth."
Connecting with audiences is what makes Camerata's performances special. "To be able to connect with audiences, to play a concert and move them to tears, is something very, very special," Jonny shares.
The orchestra's education programs in regional Queensland have also inspired students to pursue music as a career. "To meet students who are studying music at a tertiary level, and to find out that we engaged with them through our education programs in regional Queensland – that's very heartwarming."
Camerata's versatility shows in their ability to perform in unconventional venues, showing their commitment to making classical music accessible to all. "Camerata has plenty of experience performing in out-of-the-box venues," Jonny shares.
From underground performances in the Spring Hill Reservoirs to concerts in the Cross River Rail tunnel, at the Tree of Knowledge in Barcaldine, and in front of the Spanish Castle Ruins in Paronella Park, the orchestra brings music to unexpected places.
The airport environment presents its own distinct atmosphere for performances. "I don't know about you, but for me, flying can be a stressful thing," Jonny says. "Will I miss my flight, have I packed my toothbrush? Live music can really brighten someone's day and take their mind away from the stress and pressures of flying." This sentiment perfectly captures the value of live performances in the airport environment, where music serves as a calming and uplifting presence for travellers.
Through music, Camerata continues to create meaningful moments for people across Queensland, whether in concert halls, regional towns, or among busy travellers at Brisbane Airport – bringing unexpected moments of cheer wherever they perform.
