Twenty-three years ago, Erin Rounds started her aviation journey in the wash area of Brisbane Airport's flight catering facility. Today, as Customer Delivery Supervisor at dnata catering & retail, she orchestrates the complex daily dance of getting thousands of meals from kitchen to aircraft, ensuring passengers enjoy the highest quality in-flight experience.
"We're the final product for dnata catering & retail, the face out there for the company," Erin explains. "We're handing over to the airlines and cabin crew, making sure everything is perfect."
Erin's department plays a crucial role in the complex choreography of airport operations. Her team delivers everything from prepared meals to equipment and bars to aircraft, coordinating both domestic and international flights. What might seem like a simple meal service to passengers is actually the result of intricate teamwork and precision timing.
"Getting that meal out there involves a whole heap of teamwork," she says. "From washing equipment to the kitchen, everything needs to be to specification."
The aviation environment presents unique challenges, which Erin rates as an eight out of ten in terms of complexity. "Out there on the apron, around the aircraft, there's a lot of movement. There's a lot to take in."
Despite the challenges, Erin thrives in this dynamic environment.
"Each day is never the same. I love the diversity of the people we have here and the different challenges each day brings."
Working airside offers experiences you won't find in any other workplace. "You're around multi-million dollar aircraft at walking distance," Erin shares. "You get to see different events happening here in Brisbane – horses coming in for Doomben Race Day or Melbourne Cup, cars arriving for shows. There's always something new."
Her commitment to excellence is evident in every aspect of her work.
"We try to go above and beyond to make sure that every component is correct. Your bars, crockery, linen, all your other in-flight services – we provide everything to the highest standard."
Looking back on her career progression, Erin has worked across multiple departments, from wash area to cabin cleaning, and even in different cities including Perth and Sydney. "It's interesting – you don't realise in a catering facility that you'd have so many doors opening, so many career paths to progress through."
For those considering a career at Brisbane Airport, Erin's enthusiasm is contagious. "There's always something to try here. If you want the doors to open, the opportunities are there to progress."
Her dedication and passion for aviation services make Erin Rounds an integral part of the People of BNE, ensuring that every flight leaving Brisbane Airport delivers an exceptional experience for passengers.
